Need a trailer that works as hard as you do? A tipping trailer offers the perfect combination of strength, versatility, and convenience. At Fabplans, we’ve designed a range of DIY tipping trailer plans that make it easy for you to build your own hydraulic or manual tipper from the comfort of your home workshop.
Why Build a Tipping Trailer?
A tipping (or dump) trailer is one of the most practical trailer designs for trades, farms, and property maintenance. With the ability to unload materials effortlessly, a tipper saves time, reduces strain, and increases efficiency.
You can use a tipping trailer for:
- Landscaping and gardening materials (soil, mulch, gravel)
- Rubbish and green waste removal
- Firewood and fencing supplies
- Small machinery or farm equipment
Whether you’re clearing a job site or unloading materials at home, a tipping trailer makes light work of heavy loads.
Hydraulic vs Manual Tipping
When choosing your design, you’ll need to decide between hydraulic tipping and manual tipping.
- Hydraulic tipping trailers use a hydraulic ram powered by a 12V pump or hand pump to lift the trailer bed. They’re ideal for regular, heavy-duty use and make unloading effortless.
- Manual tippers use a simple mechanical pivot or winch system. They’re lighter, cheaper and perfectly suited for lighter materials or occasional use.
All Fabplans tipping trailer designs include guidance on selecting the right system for your build, including component suggestions.
Engineered for Strength & Reliability
Every Fabplans design is professionally engineered and FEA-tested, ensuring your trailer meets the highest standards of safety and durability. We focus on DIY-friendly construction that uses standard materials, easy-to-source components, and clear instructions.
Each plan includes:
- Comprehensive engineering drawings
- Complete material cut list and part list to make working out how much material you need simple.
- Information booklet to guide your build.
- DXF files for sheet metal / plate parts.
Whether you’re a tradesperson or a weekend fabricator, you’ll have all the information needed to build with confidence.
The Ultimate All-Rounder
A tipping trailer isn’t limited to one task—it’s a true all-rounder. Many builders use our tipping trailer plans as the foundation for other designs, including:
- Plant trailers for machinery and equipment
- Farm tippers for feed or fencing materials
- General-purpose utility trailers
- Custom car or equipment carriers
With its strong chassis and flexible frame design, Fabplans tipping trailers can be adapted, upgraded, or extended to suit changing needs.
Choosing Your Load Rating & Axle Setup
Before starting your build, consider how much you plan to carry. Your trailer’s Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) determines the type of running gear, braking system, and suspension you’ll need.
You can choose between:
- Single-axle tippers for smaller loads up to ~1800kg
- Tandem-axle tippers for heavier materials and professional use
- Tri-axle setups for maximum capacity or longer tray designs
