Looking to upgrade your ute with a custom-built tray? Fabplans make it easy to build your own ute tray that’s tough, practical, and built to last. Our DIY ute tray plans are designed for fabricators and DIY enthusiasts who want professional-grade results without the guesswork.
About Our Ute Tray Plans
Fabplans offers ute tray designs to suit most popular vehicle types: single cab, space cab, and dual cab models from brands such as Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Mazda BT-50.
Each plan includes detailed fabrication drawings, measurements, and part specifications, laid out so that anyone can follow along. You don’t need to be an engineer, just a capable DIYer with basic fabrication skills.
While we could offer fully customised tray plans, most builders prefer to adapt our base ute tray designs to suit their own needs. Our plans provide a strong foundation that saves you time and money by removing the planning stage and reducing material waste.
Follow the plans exactly and you’ll have a durable, road-ready ute tray that looks great. Or, use them as a starting point to build a tray that’s 100 % your own. Many of our customers have customised their trays for specific work setups, unique finishes, and extra features.
Why Build Your Own Ute Tray?
Building your own ute tray allows you to control every aspect of the design from the layout to the materials to the finish. You can tailor your build to suit your work, hobbies, or lifestyle by adding exactly what you need or removing the features you don’t want.
A DIY ute tray lets you:
- Save money compared with buying a pre-built or custom tray
- Choose between steel or aluminium construction
- Customise tie-down points, storage boxes, and accessories
- Ensure strength, durability, and load-carrying performance
- Achieve a professional-looking result at a fraction of the cost
Whether you’re a tradie, farmer, or outdoor enthusiast, a well-built tray can transform your ute.
Steel vs aluminium ute trays
Choosing between steel and aluminium comes down to how you use your ute.
- Steel trays are tougher and more impact-resistant, making them ideal for work sites, farms, and heavy-duty use. They’re easy to weld and repair but heavier overall.
- Aluminium trays are lightweight and naturally corrosion-resistant, making them great for coastal environments or general-purpose use. While they cost a little more upfront, they require less maintenance and offer better long-term resistance to rust.
Our ute tray plans can be built in either material, with small adjustments to wall thickness and reinforcement points.
Customising your tray
Once you’ve built your base tray, it’s easy to enhance it with:
- Under-tray toolboxes and lockable storage
- Ladder racks and removable sides
