Australian Small Trailer Brake Regulations: Trailers up to 4500kg ATM

If you have purchased a set of plans from Fabplans and reside in Australia, this is the guide for your braking needs for light trailers up to 4500kg ATM. We periodically update these requirements in line with the VSB1 (vehicle standards bulletin) current version 6, however, we strongly advise you to consult your state’s motor vehicle registering body to confirm your braking requirements.

Australian light trailer brake regulations

Below is a brief overview of when you are required to have brakes.

Single axle trailers

No brakes are required for single-axle trailers when the GTM is 750kg or under. However, if you are approaching 750kg, installing brakes as an extra safety measure is a good idea.

Trailers with a GTM over 750kg and up to 2000kg

For a trailer with a GTM over 750kg and up to 2000kg, or more than one axle, you will need at a minimum of overrun brakes. If you are below 2000kg GTM, you are only required to have brakes on one axle.

Trailers with a GTM over 2000kg

Brakes are required to operate on ALL wheels if your trailer has a GTM greater than 2000kg. The chosen braking system must be activated by a control signal from the tow vehicle. You will also need an emergency braking system (breakaway system) that operates for at least 15 minutes after activation should your trailer become disconnected from the vehicle.
